The Daijōsai Ceremony as Seen in Wooden Tablets: The Enthronement of Emperor Shōmu
In February 2024, wooden tablets related to Emperor Shōmu’s (701-756, r. 724-749) Daijōsai Ceremony were unearthed during excavations at Heijo-kyo. This year marks exactly 1,300 years since Emperor Shōmu’s accession to the throne. To mark this memorable milestone year, we will exhibit some of the unearthed wooden tablets in cooperation with the Nara National Research Institute for Cultural Properties.
