The belt fitting seen here was excavated from a square tomb mound measuring close to 30 meters (approx. 100 feet) on each side. The mound is located at the southeastern base of Mount Kongō. This object was a decorative fitting to be worn on the front of a belt and features detailed engravings and arabesquelike dragons rendered in openwork. It is an early example of such works in Japan and was influenced by similar fittings from China’s Jin dynasty (265–420).
