A set of seven hanging scrolls comprises this mandala, which conveys the teachings of the Lotus Sutra (Skt. Saddharmapuṇḍarīka-sūtra; Ch. Fahua jing; J. Hoke kyō) in visual form. Each scroll depicts the Buddha Shakamuni (Skt. Śākyamuni) preaching the content of the sutra before assembled crowds on Vulture Peak in India several times, and around these scenes the content of the sutra he preaches is illustrated.
