This painting was used to offer reverence to Fujiwara no Kamatari (Nakatomi; 614–669), the patriarch of the powerful Fujiwara clan whom his descendants treated as a deity. His son, Fujiwara no Fuhito (659–720), the founder of Kōfukuji Temple, is on the left in black. His other son, the priest Jōe (643–665), is on the right. The painting is thought to come from Tanzan Jinja Shrine in Nara, where Kamatari is enshrined.
