This box is placed beside priests during Buddhist ceremonies; it holds the ritual implements they will use during the ceremony and other items they may need on hand. The box is made of wood wrapped in sheets of gilt bronze, and its metal fittings are characterstic to objects of the esoteric Buddhist (mikkyō) context. Inscriptions at the base tell us that this box was made at the behest of the priest Chikai (d. 1422?–1503?). He is known to have been active in the Tango region in the northern part of what is today Kyoto prefecture.
