Amida (Skt. Amitābha) is at the center of the procession that has appeared in this world to escort the recently deceased to the Pure Land (Gokuraku Jōdo). There is a palace at thet top of the composition, and countless small transformation buddhas (kebutsu) surround the procession in this scene of the Amida’s welcoming descent (raigō), the loftiest kind described in the Sutra of Infinite Life (Skt. Amitāyurdhyāna-sūtra; Ch. Guan wu liang shou jing; J. Kanmuryōju kyō).
