This inkpad case is made from ebony, its surfaces coated in clear lacquer to embellish the natural wood grains. “Voice of the Valley Waters,” the two-character sobriquet of the Edo-period painter Ogata Kōrin (1658–1716), adorns the lid in lacquered silver dust painting (maki’e). We learn from an inscription at the base that this precious object was made for the painter Nozawa Teiu (1837–1917).
