Musashino is a region in Kantō, and this painting depicts its flowering autumnal grasses with Mount Fuji in the background. Its approach to perspective is clearly influenced by the study of Western painting, though decorative elements characteristic to the Rinpa-school and other traditional Japanese painting styles are prevalent as well. In this fusion, the painting exemplifies the early oeuvre of Yokoyama Taikan, one of the artists instrumental to the development of the Nihonga technique. This is his earliest extant work depicting Mount Fuji in the distance.
