This is a portrait of the celebrated priest Dōji (d. 744) who played an important role in national Buddhism during the Nara period. He is depicted giving a sermon, seated diagonally upon a ritual seat holding a priest’s scepter. The painting was hung opposite a portrait of Shōtoku Taishi at Kakuan-ji Temple (located in Yamatokōriyama city), the temple of the Nukata clan to which Dōji belonged.
