Here, the prince regent Shōtoku Taishi (c. 574–622) appears in the iconography known as Mizukagami no miei (“The Water Mirror”). In this iconography, he is seated frontally on a carpet, wearing vermillion garments and holding out a scepter in front of his chest with both hands. This painting has traditionally been paired with a portrait of the priest Dōji Risshi (?–744) at Kakuan-ji Temple in Yamato-Kōriyama in Nara. The institution was the successor to Kumagoridera Temple, donated to the Imperial Court by Shōtoku himself.
