Incense is a customary and important offering to the Buddha, along with offerings of flowers and light. This is an incense burner that would have been used during rites of esoteric Buddhism (mikkyō): when a sādhanā is underway at the four-cornered altar, burners like this one are placed at the center of each of the altar’s four sides. There are cloud-shaped vents for the smoke to escape done in openwork on the lid.
