This Copy of the Sutra on the Nirvaṇa of the Buddha’s Mother was written out by the monk Yushin as one scroll of a set of the entire Buddhist canon (J. Issai kyō) at Jōruri-ji Temple. It was transferred to Nenbutsu-ji Temple in Nara during the Edo period (1603-1867). It was then transformed into an accordion-style orihon by the monk Taichū Shōnin. A seal reading “Issai kyō Nanto Zenkō-in” (the entire Buddhist canon of the Zenkō-in Temple of the Southern Capital) has been stamped on the sutra. This is the earliest appearance of the name Jōruri-ji.
