Nearly a thousand forms of the bodhisattva Jizō (Skt. Kṣitigarbha) have descended upon Kasuga Taisha Shrine and the landscape surrounding it, an area that is represented here in accordance with beliefs that it was aligned with the Six Realms of Transmigration: the different existences into which sentient beings can be reborn. Jizō offers rescue to those suffering no matter the realm in which they have ended up, journeying through and across each of the Six Realms to save them. This powerful bodhisattva was believed to be the original form (honji) of the third Kasuga deity.
