This is one scroll from the complete Buddhist canon (Skt. Tripiṭaka; J. issai kyō) that Fujiwara no Kiyohira (1056–1128) commissioned. The Perfection of Wisdom Sutra (Skt. Mahāprajñāpāramitā-sūtra; Ch. Mohe bore boluomiduo jing; J. Daihannya kyō) is written out in alternating gold and silver ink. Kiyohira was the founder of the Northern Fujiwara clan that would rule over Ōshū; he laid its cornerstone from the late eleventh to the twelfth century. The canon is thought to have been completed prior to the ceremonies for the founding of Chūsonji Temple in 1126 (Tenji 3).
