This collection brings together legends spanning three scrolls that evidence the miraculous efficacy (reigen) of the Diamond Sutra (Skt. Vajracchedikā-prajñāpāramitā-sūtra; Ch. Jingang borepoluomiduo jing; J. Kongō hannya kyō)—tales revealing the supernatural benefits borne of faith in its teachings. It was compiled at the start of the eighth century in China during the Tang dynasty (618–907) and appears to have been circulating in Japan as well from early on: its influence is reflected in other collections of Buddhist legends dated to the Heian period (794–1185). This is the oldest extant complete copy of the work.
