This is a fascile from the Perfection of Wisdom Sutra (Skt. Mahāprajñāpāramitā-sūtra; Ch. Mohe bore boluomiduo jing; J. Daihannya kyō) copied for the complete Buddhist canon (Skt. Tripiṭaka; J. issai kyō) of Jingoji Temple, a set that is thought to have included around 5,400 scrolls. The project was started at the behest of Emperor Toba (1103–1156; r. 1107–1123). His son, the Emperor Go-Shirakawa (1127–1192; r. 1155–1158), enshrined the canon at Jingoji. The frontispiece of this scroll depicts a transformation scene in gold and silver ink of the historical Buddha Shaka (Skt. Śākyamuni) preaching.
