The high priest Xuanzang (J. Genjō Sanzō; 602–664) journeyed to India and the Western Regions, returning to the Tang capital with droves of Buddhist scriptures that he spent the rest of his life translating into Chinese. Appropriately, he is shown holding a Sanskrit sutra bound in the Indian style. This painting comes from Saidaiji Temple in Nara. Nara’s Hossō (Skt. Yogācāra) temples revere Xuanzang as a patriarch, tracing their lineage through him and back to Vasubandhu and Asaṅga.
