This is a commentary (composed in the 5th century) on the Yuimakyō (Sk. Vimalakīrti Nirdeśa Sūtra), which is seen as propounding the essence of Mahāyāna Buddhism. Judging from the style of the calligraphy, the manuscript is thought to have been copied early in the Heian period. The larger characters represent the text of the sutra itself, and the smaller characters are those of the commentary. This manuscript was preserved at Shōchi-in temple at Kōyasan.
