This ornamental crown is composed of five linked gilt-bronze plates into which the Gochi Nyorai, five buddhas who are incarnations of five types of cognition, of the esoteric Diamond World were hammered out in the repoussé technique. This crown was worn by a disciple in the esoteric Buddhist initiation ceremony (denpō kanjō), when he received the secret rite from his spiritual master, and it indicates that he had attained the status of Dainichi Nyorai (Skt. Mahāvairocana).
