This is a finial with rings that jangle when rattled from the top of a monk’s staff, a ritual implement held by Buddhist priests during pilgrimages, practice, and ceremonies. It is notable for its imposing form and scale. An inscription tells us that it was dedicated on the twenty-first day of the twelfth month in 1387 for use in the Golden Hall of Kōtenji.
