At the center of this painting appears the historical Buddha Shakamuni (Skt. Śākyamuni) flanked by the powerful bodhisattvas Monju (Skt. Mañjuśrī) and Fugen (Skt. Samantabhadra). Surrounding this central triad to their left and right are deities of the Buddhist pantheon believed to have offered special protection to those with faith in the Lotus Sutra (J. Hokekyō): there are the two bodhisattvas Yakuō (Skt. Bhaiṣajya-rāja) and Yuse (Skt. Pradhanasura), the Four Guardian Kings (J. Shitennō), and the Ten Female Demons (Skt. Rakṣasi; J. Jūrasetsunyo). The female demon in the upper left assumes the guise of a woman in Japanese attire who has taken the tonsure.
