These paintings form a group portrait of the eight patriarchs of the Esoteric Buddhist Shingon tradition. A set of five patriarchs that had been brought from Tang China by Kūkai was supplemented by two additional paintings created in Japan that formed a set of seven kept at Kyōōgokoku-ji Temple (Tō-ji). A portrait of Kūkai was later added to form the now-traditional set of eight patriarchs (hasso). This is precious early example of the type.
