The Rishukyō (Ch. Liqu jing), one of the fundamental scriptures of esoteric Buddhism, expounds the concept of the essential purity of all worldly phenomena. This mandala, which represents the sutra's contents, was brought back from China by the monks Ennin (794–864) and Shūei (794–864) in the early Heian period (794–1185). This example is said to be a copy of the original iconography they transmitted.
