The figure of Jizō Bosatsu (Skt. Ksitigarbha) seated upon a lotus base is etched into the face of this rather thick mirror. This shows a typical depiction of the deity, holding a shakujō (Buddhist staff) in the right hand, and a jewel in the left hand. The carving is rather rough, but it is a powerful work that is thought to have been created sometime during the Kamakura period (1185-1333) or later.
