These come from the Yamato Tenjinyama Tumulus, a massive keyhole-shaped burial mound 113 meters in length. A great many silver and crystal jewels were discovered, along with twenty-three bronze mirrors, iron swords, large swords, and other treasures. The tomb is thought to have been made for a person of great power; the mirrors buried within it represent one of the largest of any such assemblage in the country. The straight and curving lines of the design carved into the sword’s handle was believed to ward off demons and evil spirts.
