This pagoda-shaped ritual bell, known as a tōrei, is one of a set of five ritual bells that also include a tokkorei (single-vajra bell), sankorei (three-vajra bell), gokorei (five-vajra bell), and hōjurei (wish-fulfilling-jewel bell). It is placed at the center of a large altar and represent the Buddha Dainichi (Sk. Mahāvairocana). This pagoda-shaped bell takes the form of a five-stage pagoda. The shape of the bell is characteristic of the Kamakura-era variety.
