This is a candle stand made of gilt bronze and shaped on a lathe. The stand’s spike and the dish into which the wax drips rest on top of a long and slender rod made in imitation of bamboo; the rod is mounted into an elegant base. Candles were transmitted to Japan along with Buddhism, though they did not enter regular use until the late Muromachi period(1392–1573). This candle stand, which dates to the 13th century, is significant as a rare early trace of their use.
