En-no-Gyōja appears clad in a cloak and a long cowl and seated on crag in the mountains while grasping a monk's staff in his right hand and a single-pronged vajra in his left. En-no-gyōja is accompanied by Zenki and Goki in the foreground. The image of a mountain ascetic (Jpn. shugenja) off to the side is rare. One might imagine that it represents someone who was associated with the production of this painting.
