This ceremonial plough was used by the emperor to plow a field on the first Day of the Rat (Ne-no-hi) during the New Year period in hopes of insuring a bountiful crop. The plough is made of wood, and the grain of the wood surface has been painted with deep sappan red (Jp. suō). The nose of the ploughis iron. The accompanying stand is made of wood and has a painted design of flowers and birds on a gofun ground. The original item has been preservedin the Southern Section of the Shōsō-jn.
