This ceremonial broom was used along with the ceremonial plow on the First Day of Rat (Ne-no-hi) during the New Year period. The broom was employed by the empress to sweep out the silkwormchamber. Thin branches from a Zelkova tree were bound, wrapped in purple-dyed deerskin and tied with gold thread. Agate jewels (Jp. menōdama) were strung on the end of the branches. The original treasure is preserved in the southern section of the Shōsō-in.
