This lacquered cabinet (zushi) is a copy in around half-scale of an older one that was made during the Kamakura period (1185–1333). The original cabinet (now owned by the Nezu Museum in Tokyo) belonged to Kasuga Wakamiya Shrine, where it once held all 600 scrolls of the Great Perfection of Wisdom Sutra. This copy presumably dates to the Meiji era (1868–1912), when there was a concerted effort made to create replicas of many works held by Nara’s shrines and temples.
