There are eight shakuhachi flutes stored in the Shōsō-in Repository, each made from a different material such as bamboo, stone, or ivory. These three bamboo shakuhachi flutes are reproductions made by a government and privately-run company established for the purpose of putting on the Nara Exhibition. Because they are made from natural bamboo, they cannot be said to be faithful replica. Nara period shakuhachi are smaller than those made in later periods.
