This painting is a copy of “Amida Coming Over the Mountain,” a famed masterwork belonging to Zenrinji Temple in Kyoto that exemplifies Buddhist painting of the Kamakura period. In 1895 (Meiji 28), the Imperial Museum (now the Tokyo National Museum) purchased the reproduction that Yokoyama Taikan (1868–1958) made of the Zenrinji painting. This is thought to be a study of his copy, and it is one of the earliest acquisitions of the Nara National Museum.
