This was excavated behind the site of the Hitachi Province government (Ishioka City, Ibaraki prefecture), a provincial branch of the Ritsuryō bureaucracy. Produced at the Sanage kiln in present-day Aichi prefecture, it is the largest and most impactful of any extant Sanage urns. Its plain white surface is embellished with a natural light green glaze. One imagines that such a magnificent object interred the ashes of a person of great stature.
