These drawings copy the paintings of Bonten (Skt. Brahmā), Taishakuten (Skt. Śakra), and the Four Guardian Kings (Shitennō) from the doors of a zushi enshrined in around 755 (Tenpyō Shōhō 7) at the Kaidan’in of Tōdaiji Temple. The Kusha Mandala, which dates to the latter part of the Heian period (794–1185) and remains at Tōdaiji, features these six deities as they are seen here, suggesting that the zushi representations were so highly regarded as to be authoritative even centuries later.
