Haniwa were clay figures lined up in great numbers along the tiers outside of tombs. This is a large-scale haniwa that depicts a figure standing boldly on two feet. Some believe that it represents a person buried within who had been in a position of power during their lifetime. The figure wears a hat over a braided hairstyle, with bells and a pair of swords affixed to a large sash worn at his waist. This object is invaluable for offering a sense of Kofun-period attire and ornament for men in the Tōkoku area.
