Judging from its special characteristics such as the meticulous calligraphy and the condition of the paper, it is thought that this is a fragment from a Nara-period transcription of the 316th scroll of the Large Perfection of Wisdom Sutra. Only the end of the scroll, including the closing title, remains. The Large Perfection of Wisdom Sutra is a particularly lengthy scripture composed of 600 volumes. It was translated into Chinese by the Tang-era monk Xuanzang (Jpn. Genjō).
