This is one of the greatest masterworks to enter the Nara National Museum collection in recent years. It stands in a fluid pose, its hips distinctly twisted to the left. At the shins, the folds in the drapery of the robes are largely uncarved. To either side of the shins, however, the robes form regular pleats. Cut gold leaf (kirikane) and exquisite pigments combine to create motifs of lovely grandeur.

This masterpiece has come into the collection of Nara National Museum in recent years. The special characteristics of this sculpture are the dynamism of the pose with hips twisted sharply to the left, the lack of carving on the drapery of the robe over the shins, and the fine carving of straight lines in the design of the garment on both left and right. The exquisite beauty of the combination of paint and cut gold leaf and the relaxed design of the robe are striking.
