The delicate beauty of this double-ringed halo is truly alluring. There are two other known mandorlas that closely resemble this one in terms of their size and construction, right down to the last detail. The close similarity of these three mandorlas perhaps has something to do with the largescale production of Buddhist images during the late Heian period; this development was hastened by increasing numbers of Buddhist ceremonies and their incorporation into daily life.
