The body of this figure is colored gold and the garments are painted red. The tight stance with the elbows pulled in at the sides, and the garment folds arrayed in rows of matching curves, as well as the peculiarly shaped ears are reminiscent of the seated statue of Sakyamuni at Jindai-ji Temple in Tokyo and other gilt bronze statues from the Hakuho era (late-seventh to early-eighth century). An inscription reading “Kasuga” is found inside the statue.
