Engraved melon vines spill down from the lid to adorn the sides of this box carved from mulberry, a wood with especially beautiful and distinctive grains that this work is crafted to highlight; the natural patterns of the wood on the lid line up with those on the body of the box. There is a great sense of depth to the melon and vines in spite of their shallow mode of carving.
