The lid of this Japanese cedar ink stone box displays chrysanthemum and paulownia flowers. The chrysanthemum petals are inlayed with boxwood and the calyx with ivory, while the paulownia is done in mother-of-pearl using black-lipped and white-lipped pearl oyster (pinctada) nacre. It is possible that the imperial crest design was meant to celebrate 2600 years of reign.
