This sampler uses mother-of-pearl inlay and marquetry. The assemblage of geometric designs, like arrow notches, diagonal stripes, and alternating colored squares appears to be a trial based on marquetry among the Shōsō-in treasures. The feel of the mother-of-pearl, however, differs somewhat from that found in the Shōsō-in.
