This implement, called an egōro in Japanese, was held by a monk to burn incense during a Buddhist service. Because this type of long-handled incense burner has phial-shaped counterweight (Jp. byōchin) at the end of the handle, it is called a byōchin egōro in Japanese. Other examples of incense burners made of iron are unknown. The shape of the burner portion itself suggests that this item was produced during the Heian period.
