In 1567 (Eiroku 10), much of Tōdaiji Temple was lost to fire. This painting depicts the temple prior to the disaster. Its composition is somewhat unusual, as the Nigatsudō and Temukeyama Hachimangū Shrine are depicted nearly head-on in their entirety whereas the Great Buddha Hall (Daibutsuden) is viewed from a diagonal in the foreground. The way the trees and figures are depicted suggest that this is the work of a Buddhist painter active in Nara.
