Historical records tell us that Tendai priests performed the esoteric Six-Letter River-Facing Rite (Rokuji Karin hō) in 1260 (Bun’ō 1) to cure the illness of Emperor Go-Saga (1220–1272; r. 1242–1246). Originally, this was the Rite of the Six-Letter Sutra. It is called the “River-Facing Rite” because, in the Tendai sect, the final day of the ritual was held on a boat, with exorcisms performed at each of seven shallows.
