This unusual single-pronged vajra pestle is unlike any other known to exist. There are ginkgo-seed shapes instead of circles comprising the motif of “demon eyes” at the center of its handle, and the band on either side of this motif has only outward-facing lotus petals instead of a typical double band of mirroring petals. Perhaps its unusual form is modeled after an earlier vajra pestle of some importance. It comes from Kakuanji Temple in Nara.
