This tray is used on the altar in esoteric Buddhist rituals: implements like the dharma wheel and the katsuma are placed on top of it. Five trays like this one form a set, and they often take the form of a lotus flower. Here, the tray appears as a lotus flower with eight petals, and its base is low to the ground. Similar examples dated to the same period are at Murōji Temple and Saidai-ji Temple in Nara.
