The iron kettle used to boil the water for the Tea Ceremony (cha no yu) is placed over the burning charcoal held in this brazier. Motifs evoking ornament of the Tang dynasty (618–907) in China are expressed in openwork on its sides—floral arabesques (hōsōge) and Chinese-style scrolling vines (karakusamon). The lower part of the brazier has a base with flower-shaped openings at intervals. This work seems to have been created only through a close study of the Shōsōin Treasures.
