Aizen Myōō (Skt. Rāgarāja) is carved in high relief inside this container. It functions as a shrine, but it is shaped like the small boxes in which one carries incense. Achieving such a level of detail is no small feat; the sculptor even managed to create space behind each of the arms. Gold leaf cut into small squares has been arrayed in a beautiful design resembling a checked pattern on the lid of the box surrounding the seed syllable (Skt. bīja; J. shuji) embodying the deity.
